"To be eligible for submission to the post-2014 REF, authors’ final peer-reviewed manuscripts must have been deposited in an institutional or subject repository on acceptance for publication. Deposited material should be discoverable, and free to read and download, for anyone with an internet connection”

REF 2021 and open access: key points

  • Research intended for submission to REF 2021 is expected to be made open access
  • This policy came into force on 1st April 2016; from 1st April 2018 deposits must be made open access within three months of acceptance for publication
  • The HEFCE policy applies to journal articles; monographs and book chapters are not included.
