The Festival of Libraries will take place in Manchester from June 7th through June 11th, 2023. This will celebrate the cultural, creative, and wellness contributions of the 133 libraries in Greater Manchester. Now in its third year, the festival will feature world-renowned institutions such as Central Library, Chetham’s, The Portico Library, John Rylands Research Institute and Library and local libraries. Manchester's UNESCO City of Literature status will also be reflected in the event.

A range of free, exciting activities is planned for the festival this year. There will be live music performances, library exchanges, dance and theatre performances, poetry commissions, and family-friendly events. A highlight of the festival will be Simon Armitage's "Masterclass with the Poet Laureate." The poet will discuss the importance of reading, libraries, and writing. This will be followed by an unmissable reading from the poet laureate which is sure to be a highlight.

The festival will also feature an "Inspired By" lineup featuring Cheddar Gorgeous, who appeared on Ru Paul's Drag Race. In a talk that promises to inspire and engage, Gorgeous will recall her headline-making experiences. There will also be a family-friendly "Look for a Book" treasure hunt with a chance to meet the mystery author hidden in Greater Manchester's libraries.

Additionally, the festival features thought-provoking events, including a conversation with award-winning playwright Linda Brogan, who discussed how her search for memories led to the excavation of the Reno Club, a renowned soul and funk club in Manchester during the 1970s. The club provided a space for mixed-race Manchester youth who felt excluded elsewhere. The excavation, which took place 30 years after the club was demolished, inspired the book "12 Words," written by Carmen, Tia, and Catherine alongside Linda. They unlock secrets, truths, and confessions together.

We encourage University of Bolton students and staff to attend this exciting festival. For more information about the Festival of Libraries, please click here.
