Manchester is home to some amazing libraries, including Manchester Central Library, the Portico Library (below), Chethams Library, the Working Class Movement Library and many more.

Manchester City of Literature has organised its inaugural Festival of Libraries to celebrate the city's libraries and their role in culture and the community

The festival runs from 9th-13th of June and features a range of free online and in-person events suitable for all ages. The full programme looks fantastic but here are a few of our highlights:

  • Pathways into Publishing: a weekend of online events organised by the Portico Library showcasing career paths in publishing, writing, and illustration
  • Inspired by Libraries: a range of talks with authors and poets including Michael Rosen, Shirley May, Stuart Maconie and Gary Younge
  • Rare Books at Bolton Library: discover the fascinating items which make up Bolton Library and Museum Service’s Rare Book Collection
  • Black Lives Matter: Readings and Conversation - part of the launch for the poetry anthology, Black Lives Matter: Poems for a New World
  • Online storytime for families with Shasha from Bolton Libraries and Museums

Follow the hashtag #FestivalofLibraries on Twitter for updates. We can't wait to visit some of our favourite Manchester libraries again, as well as take a look at the city's newest arrival, the Manchester Poetry Library
