A number of services are available which can help you establish the whereabouts of additional material, or that might help you get hold of open access material before submitting a request:
If you are trying to access an article which we do not subscribe to, it may be worth searching for the article in Google Scholar. Google Scholar harvests and indexes open access content and there may be an open access version available online. See Access the Quick Start Guide to Google Scholar for more information.
Installing the Unpaywall browser extension for Chrome and Firefox can also provide access to open access versions of journal articles and conference papers. Discover@UGM can search open access resources. Check the option that you will see at the top of your results list, Check this box to search open access resources beyond your library's collection. This option is also available in Advanced Search.
Our Using Other Libraries page has information about other libraries that you can use, both in the Greater Manchester area, and wherever you are.
The University of Greater Manchester Library is a member of the national SCONUL Access scheme which allows part-time, distance or placement students (on a placement of ten weeks or more), full-time taught postgraduate students, permanent members of staff and postgraduate research students the opportunity to register with and borrow from other university libraries. Full-time undergraduates are entitled to reference only access under this scheme.
See our Using Other Libraries page for details of how to apply for SCONUL Access.
