RefWorks is a reference management tool available to all students and staff at the University of Bolton.

RefWorks enables you to organise, store and share your references, as well as format them in a range of styles and export them as reference lists and bibliographies.

Creating a RefWorks Account

RefWorks is available to all staff and students at the University of Bolton.

To create a RefWorks account:

  1. Go to and click the “Create account” link.
  2. Fill in your information making sure to use your email address (you can’t sign up with,, etc.).  Using your institutional email address will ensure that RefWorks recognises you as a member of University of Bolton. 

Once you activate your account (you'll receive an email with a link to complete the registration process), you’ll get access immediately and can get started managing your documents.

RefWorks comes with unlimited document storage and an option to keep using the system once you have left the University. 

Logging into RefWorks

Once you have created a RefWorks account, there are two main ways to log in. 

  1. Login at 
  2. Login via Discover@Bolton (click the RefWorks Log In link in the red bar at the top of the Discover search screen)
