"To be eligible for submission to the post-2014 REF, authors’ final peer-reviewed manuscripts must have been deposited in an institutional or subject repository on acceptance for publication. Deposited material should be discoverable, and free to read and download, for anyone with an internet connection”

REF 2020 and open access: key points

  • Research intended for submission to REF 2020 is expected to be made open access
  • Authors' manuscripts are to be made open access on acceptance for publication
  • This policy came into force on 1st April 2016
  • Between 1st April 2016 and 1st April 2017 there is three-month grace period to enable you to make the research open access
  • The HEFCE policy applies to journal articles and book chapters
