Podcasts for Learning

Have you ever considered podcasts as a great tool for learning and keeping up to date with current practice and discussions in your current field or to support your career aspirations?

For those of you studying Nursing, you may have heard of a podcast called Anthony’s Nursing Podcast- but did you know he studied here at the University of Bolton? I got in touch with Anthony to find out how he’s doing since he finished his studies here and how his podcast came about.

My name is Anthony Swan, and I am a qualified nurse. I trained at the University of Bolton between 2016-2019.

Since qualifying I have been very busy. I started in the hospice setting providing palliative care for those coming to the end of their lives. I now work in the community as a general community staff nurse. I loved the hospice and I learnt so much in my 2 years there. I have come to the community to build on my experience and get a completely different look at how nursing is delivered in people’s homes. It is something I am really enjoying.

Outside of my day job I am involved in a lot of different kind of work. I am a member of the Chief Nursing Officer for England, Ruth May’s national shared decision-making council. Something I really enjoy being a part of. I have been lucky to get presented with a lot of opportunities since qualifying.

I would always say grab the opportunities with both hands because you never know where they might take you. I now have a lot of high-profile contacts throughout nursing now which is good for my own development and opportunities.

In October 2020, I decided to set up my own podcast channel. I wanted to give students/nurses a platform to talk about different topics in a safe place. This has really taken off and now I have over 2 thousand regular listeners which is amazing and something I did not expect.

I have had a variety of guests on my podcast. Including student nurses, teachers, newly qualified nurses, clinical nurse tutors, CNO Ruth May, prison clinical lead, celebrity PT Bradley Simmonds and, I held a leadership podcast series with a wide variety of guests which was successful and interesting.

What I have learned from my podcast that it is a great way of learning and supporting good practice throughout the nursing community all over the world. If you have a few minutes take a listen. Or if you would be interested in recording with me, please get in contact with me on twitter @swan_anthony or @nursinganthony.

Finally, I just want to say all you student nurses are amazing and you’ve got this. Yes, our training is tough but believe me if someone like me who is dyslexic and left school with no GCSE’s can do it then YOU CAN!

Inspiring and motivating words from Anthony indeed!

We have also sought some other podcast recommendations from the staff of the School of Nursing and Midwifery here at the University. Here are some of the suggestions, these have been added to a podcast section on the relevant Subject Guides

Here’s a selection recommended by the Nursing team

Recommended by the Operating Department Practitioner Team

We also spoke to the Student Life Team here at the University who recommended the following podcasts around studying at University

If you have any further suggestions for podcasts in whichever area you are studying, tweet us @BoltonUniLib or comment on this blog post and we will share them with the University of Bolton community.
