Open Science promote a more collaborative and transparent approach to scientific research, which can ultimately lead to more reliable and impactful findings.
Here are a few reasons why researchers should openly share their data:
Reproducibility: Sharing research data allows other researchers to reproduce and verify the findings of a study. This is an important aspect of scientific research, as it helps to ensure the reliability and validity of the results.
Collaboration: Sharing research data allows other researchers to build upon existing research, leading to new discoveries and insights. This can help to advance scientific knowledge more quickly and efficiently.
Transparency: Sharing research data promotes transparency in the scientific process, allowing others to see how the research was conducted and how the data was analyzed.
Resource efficiency: Sharing research data can help to avoid duplication of effort and resources, as other researchers can reuse the data for their own studies.
Research data which has been annonymised and for which you have informed consent from any participant whose responses in the data can be shared openly, particularly if the data underpins a research output (such as a journal article or book chapter).
There are two ways we can help make your data openly available: through our UBIR repository and through the Zenodo Collection,
Research data can be made available through our repository UBIR. If data cannot be shared openly, then we can create a metadata only record for the data. We can create a link to the repository record which can be used to share the data. If you wish to upload your research data to UBIR, please contact the team at ubir@bolton.ac.uk in the first instance.
Zenodo is an open research portal founded to capture the outputs of European Commission-funded research.
Zenodo can be used to share data in any file format. All publicly available uploads receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) making your data sharable and uniquely citable. If you upload your shareable data to Zenodo, then we will create a metadata only record in UBIR and link it to Zenodo.
The University has its own Zenodo Collection available at https://zenodo.org/communities/uobolton. Researchers can submit data files to be added to our collection - please contact us at ubir@bolton.ac.uk for guidance.
Papers, journal articles, theses and presentations should be submitted to UBIR rather than our Zenodo Collection - which is primarily intended for datasets.
There are many other services and platforms where researchers can share their outputs. Examples are listed below, though this is not intended as an exhaustive list.
Before choosing a platform to share your data or outputs, check terms, licences and other conditions of use to ensure the platform is a good choice for your needs.
