Research Impact

Research impact refers to the influence and effects that a research project or study has on various stakeholders, including academia, society, policy, and industry. It measures the broader significance and reach of research beyond the academic community. Research impact is an important aspect of assessing the value and relevance of academic research.

Forms of impact can include:

  • Academic impact
  • Social Impact
  • Economic and Cultural Impact

Various metrics, such as citation counts, Altmetrics, case studies, and qualitative assessments, are used to measure and evaluate research impact.

The University of Bolton Research Strategy 2023-30 outlines a vision for an impact-led applied research culture which contributes effectively to student achievement, knowledge exchange and sustainable excellence in national assessments, such as the REF.
